Morten graduated from the Norwegian Acadamy of Music in 1978, having specialised in classic ragtime and early jazz piano,with emphasis on Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Eubie Blake, and Louis M Gottschalk. He recorded his first solo album in 1975 for which he received the ‘Spellemannsprisen’ award (the Norwegian Grammy).
He has been a regular member of: Magnolia Jazz Band,Ytre Suloens Jassensemble and The Norwegian Rhythm Kings, and has toured with ‘One Mo’ rks by Gershwin and Bernstein. He tours frequently in Norway and abroad – especially in USA, where he has lived for extended periods in New York and New Orleans.
More recently he has been interested in the music of the Caribbean and South America, and on his most recent solo CD Creole Connections (Lawo Classics 2014 ) he has focused on this. Morten has been involved in about 40 recordings, and amongst his solo recordings the internationally released Fingerbreaker on Decca/Universal is worth a special mention.
He was awarded the Spellemannsprisen (Norwegian Grammy) for his first solo recording (1976), was nominated in 1990 and 2000, and has been given the Norwegian Jazzforum’s Buddy-prize and the New Orleans Workshop prize.
I 1995 he received both an Obie (Off Broadway) and an Outer Critics Circle Award as the soloist in the show JELLY ROLL! in New York.
He is an honourary citizen of New Orleans
